Today’s question comes from Jeremiah. I am a solo founder of my startup and I’m wondering if I should do an About Us page that just showcases me. Would you recommend having an About page in this situation? When should you have an About Us page and what should it have on it?
This is something that we go back and forth on a lot. We talk about what you should include, if we should have photos, and if it even matters.
If you have a service-based business then it makes it a bit easier. People like to put a face to a name and like to know who’s behind the services so it can be a good thing to have your info available.
It’s not a bad thing to have everyone’s bio and photo on your about page, but it can seem a bit pretentious to basically advertise for each employee. If you do run a service business, then you should probably have your bio and photo on the site because that’s why people are working with you.
If you are a product-based business then you don’t really need to have an about page. You don’t necessarily need to have a page for the founders. You can keep those types of pages that you may want for investors on AngelList or LinkedIn.
When creating your about page, you should think about if it’s going to convince someone to buy your product. 99 percent of the time, having your employee photos and bios on the site are not going to convince anyone to buy your product.
If you are convinced you should should have info on the site about you and your team, then you can keep it somewhat hidden in the navigation. Either a page that’s linked in the footer or hidden away on another page since it’s not going to directly drive sales.
