LC003: What are the best website options for startups?

launchpeer - June 6, 2018

Today’s question:

Today’s question comes from Ian at The Mission. Ian wants to know what are the most popular website themes or templates for startups, and does it matter if your website looks the same as other websites using the same template?

Jake’s answer:

The most important thing about your website is your copy and value proposition. The design is less important. In fact, part of reason you notice other websites that look like yours is because once you’re aware of a particular theme or template, you’ll start to notice it everywhere (like when you buy a new car).

It’s perfectly fine to use a templated design. You’re customers are honestly not going to care. When you’re just starting out it’s far more important to focus on your marketing copy and go with a theme or website builder that already has good design fundamentals built into it.

If you’re going to go with WordPress, there are a ton of theme options out there, but the one I recommend the most is X theme for it’s ease of use and variety of design templates.

That said, I wouldn’t actually recommend WordPress if you’re just starting out. What you need most something simple that lets you get a page live with an email opt-in or whatever your offer is. You can alwasys change things as you grow and the need arises. Here are a few options I recommend:

The most important question when your evaluating these various platforms is, does it let me customize what I need to change easily and efficiantly?
